2012 Annual Business Meeting

Wichita Airport Hilton, Salon IV

January 26, 2012  |  4:30 - 6:00 pm

 Good morning,
I want to take this opportunity to invite you to the 37th annual meeting of the Kansas Chapter of the American Fisheries Society.
The meeting will be held on Thursday January 26 from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm in the Salon IV meeting room at the Airport Hilton, Wichita, KS.
Some of the primary topics to be discussed at this years meeting will be:
Midwest Fish & Wildlife meeting to be held in Wichita, KS
Disbursement of pre-determined amount to help students in the chapter offset the cost of attending KNRC.
There has already been discussion pertaining to this topic, one of the preliminary ideas presented by a member was as follows:
1) Start with $500
2) Funds will be divided by undergrads from any school that attend the meeting and request reimbursement. Maybe have a maximum amount ($50/each) in case only a few students show up.
3) Undergraduate students present their registration receipt and mailing address at the business meeting. It also might be good to require students to help sell tickets.
4) KSAFS Treasurer or KS subunit determines how many students and then divides funding among those students.
5) Check is mailed to each student.
This has not been voted on, but is a good start to continuing and hopefully resolving the discussion pertinent to this topic.
We will also be holding officer elections at the meeting. If you know of someone who is interested in running for any of the positions that will be open, please encourage them to do so and nominate them at the meeting. We will hopefully have two nominees for the position of President-elect and will open the floor to further nominations at meeting time.
If there are other topics that you wish to discuss at the meeting, either get in touch with me or be prepared to present them at the meeting.
Looking forward to seeing you all in Wichita!

The 72nd Midwest Fish and Wildlife Conference will be held in Des Moines, Iowa during December 4-7, 2011. The meeting will include exceptional plenary speakers, workshops, symposia, contributed papers as platform (oral) and poster presentations, and technical committee meetings. We invite submission of contributed papers on topics of fish and wildlife science, management, conservation, education, or policy. Abstracts will be available on the website, but proceedings will not be published.Contributed presentations from completed studies or significant results from ongoing work will be given highest priority. Acceptance of papers and posters from work currently in progress will depend on abstract quality and program space. Platform presentations and posters will be accepted based on technical merit and contribution to our knowledge of species, populations, communities, ecological processes, management practices, conservation initiatives, education models, or policy issues. However, meeting time and space is a limiting factor and we may not be able to accept all papers submitted, whether from professionals or students. Deadline for abstract submissions is September 1, 2011.
PLATFORM PRESENTATIONS
All platform presentations will be scheduled for 20 minutes, which includes 15 minutes for the presentation and 5 minutes for a question and answer period. A limited number of platform presentations may be included within symposia when the subject matter is consistent with a symposium’s theme and there is available space within the symposium’s session. The PCs running the platform presentations will be running Microsoft PowerPoint 2007; older versions of PowerPoint may not translate as expected. No other formats (such as slides, overheads, or video) will be accepted.POSTERSParticipants are encouraged to consider presentation of their work as posters to provide an opportunity for authors to participate in more detailed communication with attendees. Posters will be displayed for 2 full days, and authors are requested to attend their posters during a scheduled break Monday afternoon and for 1 hour during a networking event Tuesday evening. Posters will be displayed on horizontal boards 4-ft. high x 8-ft. wide.

Annual AFS Meeting 2011

Due to the overwhelming number of symposium proposals received, the Program Committee needs additional time to work through them.  For this reason the deadline for poster and contributed paper abstracts is being extended from February 11 to February 25. The website and submission software will reflect the changed deadline as soon as possible.
Based on the interest so far, this meeting will be considerably larger than the Anchorage or San Francisco meetings.  Even with an expanded number of concurrent sessions, the Program Committee expects space for contributed oral papers to be limited.  Therefore we encourage you to submit abstracts for posters rather than contributed papers.  The poster space available is huge, with excellent traffic flow, so we expect that you will be very pleased with your experience.

2011 Midwest Student Fisheries Colloquium

Hello everyone,

As you may know, the 4th Annual Midwest Student Fisheries Colloquium is fast approaching (January 21-22, 2011).  We (South Dakota State University Student sub-unit AFS) have been working hard to put together an excellent meeting, and currently we are looking to get a hold on how many attendees and presenters we will be having there.  At this point, we should be able to offer lodging to anyone that can make it out to Brookings for the meeting (along with all meals during the meeting).  We hope to encourage participation by keeping meeting costs as low as possible for attendees.  The meeting will include dinner and a social on Friday evening featuring two excellent speakers, followed by the student symposium on Saturday.  The meeting is an excellent opportunity for undergraduate or graduate students to present their research (even if it is in the preliminary phase) to others in a relaxed environment and get feedback/ideas from other students from across the Midwest.  We encourage both oral and poster presentations.

If you are interested in attending, please let me know so that we can plan accordingly.  Just send me a quick email and either mail in the registration fees ($15, address below)) or arrange some type of payment agreement with me.  In addition, if anyone would like to present, let me know and we can get you situated to do so.  Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions you might have regarding the colloquium.

Thanks much and look forward to hearing from many of you,

Luke Schultz
2011 Midwest Student Fisheries Colloquium Coordinator

Student Writing Contest

This contest represents a great opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to publish their work in popular format. The ability to translate scientific research into implications that are understood by a general audience is a skill that is highly sought by today’s employers. However this unique opportunity to publish in Fisheries is underutilized. Please help us to generate submissions by including this announcement through any opportunities you deem prudent. Progress towards this endeavor will undoubtedly fortify the significance of fisheries research while adding meaning and value to the students that pursue this opportunity. Please refer to the attached letter for more specific information regarding the contest. Submissions are due May 5, 2010. For additional details click here.
